Canberra's Leading Aboriginal-Led Cultural Immersion Programs

The Ngunnawal (Ngunawal) and Ngambri people are the Traditional Custodians of the Canberra region and surrounding Country. For over 20,000 years, they have cared for the land, waterways, and hills across what is now the Australian Capital Territory and nearby parts of New South Wales including Queanbeyan.

Aboriginal Cultural Immersions on Ngunnawal (Ngunawal) and Ngambri Country.

Aboriginal Cultural Immersions delivers authentic Aboriginal cultural awareness training and Indigenous cultural workshops in Canberra, providing meaningful learning experiences through the Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri peoples.

Our programs bring together Aboriginal artists, cultural educators, musicians and performers who share knowledge, stories and cultural practices in a respectful and engaging environment. These immersive workshops are designed to help organisations deepen their understanding of Aboriginal culture, history, and contemporary life.

We work with Federal Government departments, ACT Government agencies, universities, schools, and corporate organisations across Canberra and the Australian Capital Territory.

Ngunnawal (Ngunawal) Country and the Canberra Region

The Ngunnawal or Ngunawal people are the Traditional Custodians of the Canberra region and surrounding Country. For thousands of years, Ngunnawal/Ngunawal people have maintained deep cultural, spiritual, and environmental connections to this landscape, including the rivers, plains and hills that shape the Canberra region.

Today, Ngunnawal/Ngunawal people continue to play an important role in the cultural life of the national capital. Their custodianship is recognised through Welcome to Country ceremonies, cultural education programs, public art, and community leadership across the ACT.

Aboriginal Cultural Immersions works with Aboriginal facilitators who bring knowledge, cultural authority, and lived experience to every program.

Ngambri People and Their Connection to Canberra

The Ngambri people are also recognised by many as having a deep historical connection to the Canberra region and its surrounding landscapes. Ngambri families have long maintained cultural and spiritual ties to Country, particularly around the waterways and plains that run through the national capital.

Historical records and oral histories describe Ngambri people living along the Molonglo River and surrounding valleys, caring for the land and maintaining cultural traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Today, Ngambri descendants continue to contribute to the cultural life of Canberra through community leadership, cultural education, and participation in ceremonies and cultural events. Their ongoing connection to Country is an important part of the rich Aboriginal heritage of the ACT.

Respectful acknowledgement of both Ngunnawal/Ngunawal and Ngambri connections to the Canberra region reflects the complexity of Aboriginal history and highlights the importance of listening to community voices and supporting Aboriginal-led cultural initiatives.

Cultural Education for Government and Organisations

Canberra is home to Australia’s national institutions and many federal agencies. Cultural awareness training is increasingly recognised as an important part of building respectful workplaces and improving engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Our Canberra programs are designed to help organisations:

Build cultural understanding and respect

Strengthen Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs)

Improve engagement with Aboriginal communities

Develop awareness of Aboriginal history, culture and cultural protocols

Participants leave with practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of the continuing cultural presence of Aboriginal people across Australia.

Cultural Revitalisation and Learning

Across the ACT and surrounding regions, Aboriginal communities are actively strengthening culture through language revitalisation, cultural education, and learning on Country programs.

Elders and community leaders play a vital role in guiding cultural practices and ensuring knowledge is shared respectfully with future generations.

By participating in Aboriginal cultural workshops and awareness programs, organisations contribute to the broader goal of reconciliation, cultural respect, and recognition of Aboriginal cultures as a foundational part of Australia’s national identity.
